The morning of Thiruvonam of 2013 brought us the sad news about the demise of our beloved Fr. Abraham Kunnakkatt. All those who came in contact with him recognize him as a great pastor, missionary, good writer, good artist and a zealous religious. He was full of love for the poor and the oppressed. He was born on 10th May, 1943 as the fifth child of Mathew and Aley of Kunnakkattu family of Azhangad Parish in the diocese of Kanjirapally. He had two brothers and four sisters. After completing his preliminary school studies at Peruvanthanam, Ponkunnam and Mutholy , with an ardent desire to follow Jesus he joined the Little Flower Congregation on 13th June 1960 . His Minor Seminary and Novitiate was at Mookkannur. After completing the canonical novitiate he made his First Profession on 17th May, 1964. He committed himself fully to the Lord by his Perpetual Profession on 17th May, 1968. After the completion of his philosophical studies at our Little Flower Seminary and the Theological Studies at the Pontifical Seminary, Alwaye, he was ordained to the Priesthood along with Rev. Frs. George Kulampally, Sebastian Puthenchirayil, Geroge Kudukkamthadathil and Mani Parambett, on 17 December by His Eminence Mar Joseph Cardinal Parecattil at the Mangalapuzha Seminary Chapel. As a Priest he served the congregation in various capacities such as the Bursar of SWTS, Aluva, and Superior at Attara, Mullakkanam, Basil Bhavan Mookkannur, Poovathode, New Delhi and Mudickal. He also served as procurator of the Ashram at Velur, the Parish Priest of Makhu and the member of Muktsar Ashram in Punjab and the hostel warden of BBS, Bikaner in Rajasthan. Fr. Abraham is ever remembered for his pastoral zeal. He was Parish Priest in many of thetParishes in Kerala especially in the Archdiocese of Changanachery and the diocese of Kanjirapally . He worked as Vicar in the parishes of Vallakkadav, Pazhayidam, Velichiyani and Purakkad. From 1999 to 2004 he rendered his pastoral service in USA as the Associate Pastor. All those who came in contact with Fr. Abraham found a loving and affectionate person, a humorous person and good pastor in him. The big crowd from various parts of Kerala gathered for his funeral is really proving that. After completing his six years of Superiorship at Khristu Jyothy Mission Bhavan, Mudickal, 2012 onwards- Fr. Abraham was taking rest there at Mudickal. He was a man who took all the pains and sufferings silently. He had a stroke and was bedridden for almost one year. On the morning of Thiruvonam, at 4 am on September 16, 2013, he breathed his last at the Sanjoe Hospital, Perumbavoor. The body was brought to Khristu Jyoti Mission Bhavan, Mudickal by 6.30 am where his own nephew Rev. Fr. Jacob Kanayankal CST, the Provincial Superior of St. Joseph Province and other Fathers celebrated the Holy Eucharist. Till the next day morning the body was kept in the Mission House Chapel. All the Priests work in the province were in the Provincial house for a meeting. When they received the news the meeting was stopped and all concelebrated the Requiem Mass with Fr. Provincial as the main celebrant. Fr. Provincial and some of the fathers rushed to Kerala for the funeral ceremony. On 17 morning the First part of the funeral was officiated by Rev. Fr. Varghese Poovathumoottil CST, the Superior of the Mission House. Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Chakkiath paid homage to Fr. Kunnakkattu and prayed an office for the dead. After that the body was taken to Little Flower Seminary, Aluva where the funeral was scheduled to take place. Very Rev. Fr. Mathew Kumpuckal CST, the Superior General officiated the second part of the funeral. The third part of the funeral was begun with the concelebrated Holy Eucharist by Rt. Rev. Dr. Mathew Arackal, the Bishop of Kanjirapally as the main celebrant. His excellency preached the homily. The fourth part and the final rites were done by Rt. Rev. Dr. Sebastian Adayanthrath, the Auxiliary Bishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly. His mortal remains are buried in the Cemetary chapel of Little Flower Seminary Aluva. MAY THE LORD GRANT HIM ETERNAL REST Fr. John Kapiarumalayil CST Provincial Superior NB: It is to be read in all our Ashrams at the eve of the Death Anniversary I HAVE FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT, I HAVE FINISHED THE RACE, I HAVE KEPT THE FAITH.
