Slept in the Lord

Indeed, January 4th was a day of great loss for Little Flower Congregation especially to Khrist Jyoti Province, because it lost one of its pioneer missionaries. It was really shocking to hear about the sudden demise of Fr. Savio Peehatt CST, around 8.45 PM. As we all bade farewell to the year 2018 on 31st of December, Fr. Savio bade farewell to Mudickal Ashram and its inmates, to be admitted in the hospital due to the deteriorating condition of his health. He gave gifts to all who took care of him, he blessed them and he prepared himself with the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As if he is sure of his departure to heaven, he said good bye to all saying, “I will not come back alive” and to the hospital. Fr Savio Peechat was born on 30th September, 1939 at Nellimattam in the Eparchy of Kothamangalam as the 11th son of late Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Elizabeth. Along with the other siblings he grew up enjoying their love and care. After completing his studies from St. George High School Kothamangalam, he joined the minor seminary of CST Congregation at Mookkannoor on 06th June, 1956. After a perfect formation in prayer life and religious convictions, he offered himself to God through the first religious profession on 17th May, 1958. After the Philosophical and Theological studies from Mangalapuzha, he was ordained a Priest by Cardinal Mar Joseph Parecattil, the then Archbishop of Ernakulam on 10th March, 1967 at Mangalapuzha Seminary, Aluva. As a young and vibrant priest he worked in many different parishes in Kerala fulfilling the dream of Valliachan, including Little Flower Seminary, Aluva. He served in our Ashrams at Puthencruz, Mathunkal, Poovathod and Mookkannur. From 1974 to 1980 he was a vibrant and zealous Pastor in Trivandrum. He served the parishes of Kanjirampara, Anjamada, Moonnammood and Manalayam. After the successful mission there he joined the Attappady mission in 1980 as the Parish Priest at Thavalam and Thritwamala. In 1982 he was appointed as the procurator of Little Flower Study House, Aluva. During his three years of remarkable service at Aluva he also worked as the Vicar of Periyarmugham Parish. In the year 1985 Fr. Savio with great missionary zeal joined our Punjab Mission. As a zealous missionary Fr. Savio served in our mission stations at Abohor, Faridkot, Ferozpur Canal Colony, Sikhwala and Fazilka as Parish Priest, Superior and Manager of the school. After the long twenty six years of mission work in Punjab, in 2011 he came to Mudickal for the treatment. He was so hopeful to return to the missions after the treatment, but unfortunately he couldn’t come back. He started to take rest in our Mission House at Mudickal. He celebrated the golden Jubilee of his Priestly Ordination on 10th March, 2017. His 80th Birthday was celebrated in the Ashram with due solemnity. On 31st December 2018 because of serious ill health he was admitted in San Joe Hospital Perumbavoor, and was taken to the ICU. On 2nd January 2019 Rev. Fr. George Alukka CST, the Provincial Superior anointed him and on Friday 4th January 2019 at.08.45 PM he breathed his last. The funeral service was conducted on 6th January. The body of Fr. Savio was brought to Khrist Jyothi Minor Seminary Mudickal by 8.30 in the morning. Rev. Fr. John Kudilil CST sang an office for the dead followed by the first part of the burial led by Fr John Kapiarumalayil CST, the Rector and Superior of Khrist Jyothi Mission Bhavan, Mudickal. After that there was continuous office for the dead led by many Fathers from our congregation and the neighbouring parishes. Many came to pay homage to their beloved Fatherji. Many dignitaries including Mar George Madathikandathil, Bishop of Kothamangalam, Archbishop Mar Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, Bishop of Faridabad, Mar Jose Puthenveettil, Auxiliary Bishop of Ernakulam – Angamaly and Bishop Emeritus Mar Thomas Chakkiath led the prayer services. The second part of the funeral was officiated by Very Rev.Fr. Francis Kilivallickal CST, the Superior General. The third part together with the Holy Qurbana was begun at 3.00 PM which was Celebrated by Mar Thomas Thuruthimattam CST, Bishop of Gorakhpur. The Superior General and all four Provincials concelebrated. Rev. Fr George Alukka CST, the Provincial Superior of Khrist Jyothi Province, shared his beautiful experience with Rev. Fr Savio. After the Eucharistic Celebration and the Valedictory rites the body was taken to Little Flower Seminary, Aluva for the burial. Mar Dominic Kokattu CST officiated the last part of the funeral service in the cemetery. He also found time to share his memories of Fr Savio. Fr Savio was a well-known photographer of the province. Some of us might have witnessed his quality in photography. He is also well-known as Toffy Fatherji. He always used to make it a point that those who approached recieve at least a chocolate. Most of us might have experienced this kind of care from him. His life and presence too had the same feeling. Whenever we approached him, Fr Savio made it the moments of happiness. In spite of his ill health, he wanted to visit the mission again, but he could not make it. He never stopped there, as St. Little Flower, he always caressed the mission and the missionary visions with him. He used to pray a Hail Mary for all the missionary activities undertaken by the Congregation especially by the Khrist Jyoti Province. And we are sure that he would continue to pray and do the missionary activities from heaven. Little Flower Congregation especially Khrist Jyoti Province will always be grateful to Almighty God for blessing us in the person of Fr. Savio Peechatt CST. He will always be remembered of his missionary zeal and dedication to the missionary activities. May the good God grant him eternal rest. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones” Psalms 116, 15
