Rev. Fr. Paul Karumathy was born on 1 September, 1937 at Neduvannur in the Diocese ofErnakulam in Kerala, as the son of late Varghese and Rosa. He joined Little Flower Congregation in 1957 and had his minor seminary training at Sacred Heart Minor Seminary, Mookkannoor Having completed his Novitiate at Little Flower Novitiate House, Mookkannur, he made his First Profession on 17 May, 1961. He did his studies in philosophy at Little Flower Seminary, Aluva, and completed his theological formation at St. Joseph's Pontifical Seminary, Mangalappuzha. He was ordained priest on 26 December 1968 atMookannoor. His first appointment was as the procurator at Little Flower Seminary, Aluva, in 1969. Since 1970, he rendered his services as the Director of Sacred Heart Bala Bhavan at Mookkannoor. From 1974 to 1980, he pursued Doctoral Studies in Moral Theology at Catholic University, Leuven, with specialization in Social Justice. Following his studies, he was appointed coordinator of the social work activities at Little Flower Generalate, Thrikkakara. He served the congregation as its Superior General from 1982 to 1985. Subsequently, he had been Assistant Superior General from 1985 to 1988. The next phase of his life saw the flowering of the missionary seeds deeply sown within him as he spent nearly two decades in the mission areas of Rajasthan and Punjab in the Dioceses of Ajmer, Jaipur and Jalandhar. The educational and social apostolates occupied the major focus of his missionary activities. Besides rendering pastoral and social services at respective stations, he had been manager of the Bikaner Boys School from 1988-1997 and 2000-2003; St. Mary's School, Sikar, from 2003 to 2006; and Sacred Heart Convent School, Sriganganagar, from 2006 to 2009. During his missionary services in Rajasthan, he was elected Provincial Superior of the St. Joseph's Province for 1997 to 2000. He underwent a bypass surgery in 1999 and despite the challenges to his health, he returned to the missions in 2000. However, in 2009, he had to return to Kerala due to high diabetics and related complications. Since then he had been on treatment and rest based at our Khrist Jyoti Mission Bhavan, Perumbavoor. As he developed fresh complications with his varicose, he was admitted at Lisie Hospital, Ernakulam, on 16 December, 2016. As though he anticipated the nearness of his heavenly entry, on the very first day of his admission at the hospital, he made his confession with the hospital chaplain. He felt breathing trouble initially which eventually developed into multiple organ dysfunctions. On January 6, he was shifted to the ICU as his overall condition deteriorated significantly. The incremental degrees of physiologic derangements in internal organs particularly kidney, lungs and liver finally led to a massive cardiac arrest at on January ^ and he breathed his last. Our pleasant memories of Fr Paul will continue to accompany us forever as an affectionate brother, a dedicated missionary, a passionate champion of the causes of justice, and as an inspiring leader. As the Superior and provincial of the congregation, his farsightedness and charismatic vision, coupled with his administrative and managerial skills added several new streams to the progressive growth of the congregation. True to the choice of the topic of social justice for his doctoral studies, his heart always contained the vibrant throbbing of empathy for the poor and the oppressed. Wherever and whenever the issues of justice were at stake, he was quick to make a prophetic intervention; a characteristic he has been holding up to his end, as he regularly corresponded through the news papers on matters of social justice even during the days of his treatment and rest at Mudickal. His leadership in social work typically embodied these social convictions, and his activities always bore the imprint of his passion for justice. The institutions under his management made exponential progress during his term, especially in the educational field. His patient endurance of all his pain during the long years of his treatment and rest was a true testimony to Christian suffering. Even as he became critically ill and was losing memory, there were sparks of graceful pleasantries on his lips and eyes. We believe his sufferings are not only a ransom for his own sanctification, but a depository of merit for divine grace upon all who know him. Now that he has joined the heavenly hosts, we pray that his face may shine forth with the blissful vision of the Divine Light and may his soul enjoy the heavenly bliss of the close of embrace of His Father in Heaven.
