After having spent 57 long and dedicated years of service in our Congregation, Bro. Arsenius left us for his eternal reward on the 3rd of November, 1990. All those who came into contact with him recognize him as zealous religious and a great lover of the poor and the oppressed. He has the qualities of both head and heart. He was gentle in dealings and soft in heart .He was simple and hard working all through his life. Above all he was a man of prayer - a man of God. Bro. Arsenius was born of deeply Christian parents, Varghese and Elizabeth, on 20th November, 1907 at Nellimattom. Having completed his school education, he joined the Little Flower Congregation as its first member on 19,h March, 1931. He had his pre-Novitiate training under Fr. Varghese Nampiaparambil and Novitiate under Fr. Basilius, the founder of the Congregation. He made his first profession on 17lh December, 1933. Being the first member of the Congregation, Bro. Arsenius worked hard for its growth He held responsible offices in all the first Ashrams at Mookkannur, Mathumkal, Kottoor, Poovathode, Puthencruz and Social Welfare Technical School, Aluva. He worked hard to make the Ashrams self-sufficient by cultivating the land skillfully. He also rendered his service to the curia of the Arch-diocese of Ernakulam and the Malabar Mail Press. And as an assistant to the Novice-Master, Bro. Arsenius rendered very substantial service at Puthencruz. In all these places, people still remember him for his spirit of prayer, simplicity, hard work, devotion to duty, patience, amiability, generosity and dedicated service. When the Congregation was divided into clerical and Lay in 1978, Bro. Arsenius remained with the Fathers. After retiring from active Apostolate, he was residing in the Little Flower Seminary, Aluva. He spent the last decade of his life in constant prayer and in serving the community in the way he could. He was seen day and night in the chapel praying before the Blessed Sacrament. He was a source of inspiration for all, especially, for the seminarians. His spirit of prayer, childlike simplicity and regularity of life attracted and inspired all who knew him. Bro. Arsenius knew and was conscious of the end of his life by October 1990.He told the seminarians who were going for a picnic: "I have another journey," and at another occasion to those who inquired about his health he said, "My days are fast approaching." During his last days he was constantly reading the books on "Suffering". In the evening of October 24th 1990, he fell down in his room and the seminarians rushed to his rescue and in no time reached him to the Carmel Hospital, Asokapuram. All kinds of medical aid rendered to him were of no avail. On 3rd November, 1990, at 11.30 a.m. receiving the blessings and kissing the crucifix he commended his spirit in the Lord. His body was brought to Little Flower Seminary Chapel and laid in state so that the people who knew him could pay their last homage. The funeral was conducted by Mar George Punnakottil, the Bishop of Kothamangalam, and a large crowd attended it. His body was entombed in Little Flower Seminary, Aluva. May the Lord grant eternal rest to the soul of our dear Bro. Arsenius. Through his intercession let us ask showers of blessings from Heaven above. IN THE EVENING OF THIS LIFE I SHALL APPEAR BEFORE YOU WITH EMPTY HANDS FOR I DO NOT ASK YOU LORD TO COUNT ANY WORK I WANT TO LABOUR SOLELY OUT OF LOVE".
